An AI security companion

Imagine you’re responsible for keeping your company secure. You need to know if there are vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, or risks, but traditional security tools show you massive dashboards full of charts, alerts, and data. To get answers, you often have to write queries, configure rules or digest charts and data.

The research

To address these challenges, we conducted in-depth user research. We interviewed DevOps engineers, front-end teams, and SREs to understand their workflow and pain points. The common theme was the need for a unified, intuitive tool to streamline monitoring and improve site performance.

Vision-driven design

As Head of Product Design, I lead the product vision of J1 products, shaping the AI interaction model, and guiding cross-functional teams to deliver a coherent and scalable user experience. This project aimed to position AI as a strategic differentiator for the security platform while reducing operational complexity for teams.

Problem

Security platforms are inherently complex and overwhelming, often requiring expert knowledge to interpret alerts, investigate vulnerabilities, and take corrective action. Key challenges included:

01

High cognitive load and steep learning curves for users

02

Slow response times due to manual investigation processes

03

Difficulty in accessing actionable insights quickly

The design challenge was to create a tool that made security intelligence intuitive, trustworthy, and actionable, without sacrificing depth for experts.

What I did on the project

As Head of Product Design, I lead the product vision of J1 products, shaping the AI interaction model, and guiding cross-functional teams to deliver a coherent and scalable user experience. This project aimed to position AI as a strategic differentiator for the security platform while reducing operational complexity for teams.

The solution: JupiterOne Agentic

Natural language design goals

We established 5 strategic goals to guide the effort:

  1. Enable AI-assisted guidance that reduces cognitive load for novice users while maintaining control for experts

  2. Ensure transparent and explainable AI to build trust and facilitate adoption

  3. Support quick insights and actionable outcomes within existing workflows

  4. Create a scalable system capable of extending AI-powered features as organizational needs evolve

  5. Create a branding that resonate with the audience and the project goal

Vision-driven design

I led a vision-setting process that connected business objectives, user needs, and AI capabilities. This included defining key user journeys, mapping decision points, and prioritizing features that maximized impact while managing risk.

Natural language and prompts interaction

Users can ask complex security questions in plain language. AI provides structured responses along with reasoning and confidence levels to ensure transparency. This design balances automation with human oversight, critical for enterprise adoption.

User research

User testing included interviews, contextual inquiries, and scenario testing:

01

Analysts valued predictable, explainable AI guidance

02

Novice users appreciated step-by-step suggestions

03

Experts wanted fine-grained control and the ability to override AI recommendations

These insights shaped our approach to transparency, error handling, and feedback mechanisms.

Outcome:

We extended this capability to our main platform to give the possibility to the users to get to a result quicker without using our Query language.

Impact

Adoption and qualitative feedback showed significant benefits:

01

Reduced time to triage vulnerabilities

02

Higher engagement from non-expert users

03

Increased trust in AI-assisted recommendations among experienced analysts

AI is now a foundational part of our security platform, expanding the product vision beyond core incident response.

Reflection

Designing the future of security

Leading this project reinforced the importance of balancing usability and trust in AI-powered systems. My role encompassed vision-setting, design strategy, and cross-functional alignment, ensuring the solution met both business goals and user needs. With this project we shaped not only a product but a scalable interaction model for AI security tools that have been adopted across our ecosystem of products.
